Split system air conditioners are considered to be a type of central air conditioning. With a split air conditioner, an outdoor metal cabinet contains the condenser and compressor; an indoor cabinet contains the evaporator. With many split air conditioners the indoor cabinet also contains a furnace. The split system air conditioner has the evaporator coils installed in the cabinet or main supply duct of the furnace. If the home has an existing furnace, the split ac can be tied into this furnace and may be a more economical option to install when compared to a packaged central air conditioner.

If you are thinking of purchasing an air conditioning unit there are many options to choose from. There are window units, portable units, central air conditioning, and split unit air conditioners. Window units can be unsightly if you are looking at cooling off a front room in your home, as the unit will be sticking out of a window and can be an eyesore from the street if there is no foliage to cover the exposed unit. Portable units are useful and ideal if you plan on moving the unit on a regular basis. But if you want to free up floor space then a split AC system may be the right choice. Central air conditioning is another option, however if you do not have existing ductwork in your home, the installation can become rather expensive. If you do not have the funds to pay for such a big expense, but you want to cool more than one room in your home, another option to packaged central air conditioning is a ventless, dual split air conditioner. With a dual mini split air conditioner you can have the units installed up to four rooms. Some models allow up to four indoor air-handling units to be connected to one outdoor unit. The indoor units are installed on the wall, with a three-inch hole going through the wall for the conduits. With a mini split ac you are able to control each individual room, as they are equipped with their own thermostats. Mini split air conditioners may be considered a better option from a central air conditioner as you are not only able to control the temperature of each room, but you are able to save energy and money by turning off the units in rooms that are not being used.

Through many sites online you will find information on a mini split air conditioner, dual split air conditioners, precharged split air conditioner, and more. You can also get instructions and tips on how to install a split air conditioner.
